Black Day in Korea

I was doing research for my Korean presentation earlier and I came across this interesting culture in Korea. In fact, I did present on it. (Well, my group lar, Colin did) Teehee.

Here's the thing. People are more familiar with Valentines Day which is on February 14th. However it is celebrated differently in Korea compared to how we celebrate here in Malaysia. On Valentines Day, girls will give chocolates and other gifts to the guys. It’s the time where girls can confess their love to someone they like. It is similar to our Valentines Day but is more one-sided.

When is the payback time you ask? White Day is created. It falls exactly one month after Valentine's day, on March 14th.

The guys who received the chocolate on Valentine's Day are expected to return the favour by giving candies to the girls, and usually the candies come with more expensive gifts.

Erm.

This is more like it. :D Ok lar, I'll date you.

So, if a girl did not give you chocolates on Valentine's Day and you have no sweetheart to give expensive gifts to on White Day...then go eat black black noodles on April 14! It's a Black Day!!

Black Day is an informal tradition for single to get together and eat noodles with black bean sauce (Jjajangmyeon). These noodles are Koreanised Chinese food with black bean sauce where you can find in any Chinese restaurant. Over here in Malaysia you can have Hokkien Mee instead of Jjajangmyeon. :P

Other Fun Days in Korea

Other than the chocolates people, the candies people and the Jjajangmyeon people, the other marketers have also come out with other commercialized special day for each month of the year.
Some days have gained attraction such as Black day and White Day. However, people don’t really pay attention and practice in the other days.

Here are some:

January 14th is Diary Day - a mutual exchange of New Year's diaries

May 14th is a Rose Day - a mutual exchange of roses

July 14th is a Kiss Day - need not to explain.

November 14th is a Movie Day

December 14th is a Hug Day - love this^^

Once again, no one really pays attention to these days.
So don't go around and say "Hey it's Kiss Day!! Kiss Me!!!!"

It's not going to work.
